What does it take to win? Dr. Jason Richardson an athlete and psychologist translates techniques that athletes use into techniques that all of us can use in our own fields.
He discusses Automatic Negative Thoughts that typically interfere with success:
Overgeneralization, one event is generalized to our day or our lifetime.
Filtering, only focusing on what went wrong and ignoring what went right.
All or nothing thinking, not thinking on a continuum but as either or.
Catastrophizing, only thinking about the worst case scenario and excluding all other possible outcomes.
Emotional thinking, confusing emotions with facts.
Shoulds, that is being rigid with your expectations and ideas of what one could do next
Instead we could make a plan, based on small incremental actions, and focus on the process. It also helps to rule in possibilities and look for the silver lining of the situation. In addition, we need to accept the situation and move on.
