Children who think effort leads to achievement outperform children who think that being smart leads to achievement. 182 fifteen month old babies observed an adult either -1- persist and succeed or -2- effortlessly succeed. They were then given an age appropriate toy. The babies who saw the adult persist, persisted twice as often as the ones who observed effortless success. The babies generalized the value of effort.
