Praise your child for trying hard and for learning, rather than for how smart they are. This approach will increase their self esteem, increase their confidence, help them know they are in control of their abilities and increase their success in the world.
Dr Carol Dweck is a researcher who is promoting this concept she calls ‘the growth mindset”.
A growth mindset is one in which they believe their intelligence can be developed and they can learn at any and all times they choose to. Phrases like “if you keep practicing you will learn it” are very helpful.
