Moving Past Gender Barriers to Negotiate a Raise
Women face more difficulty asking for a raise than men do. Therefore they need to do a bit more research and use a slightly different approach to avoid being perceived as demanding and unlikeable.
Here are some suggestions from the experts:
-Keep a record of positive feedback you receive, overtime clocked and any clear metrics you have about your performance, so you can discuss them in an ‘objective way’ during a performance review.
-When possible subtly ask colleagues to mention your excellent work to your boss/supervisor.
-Research the salary range of others in your position. Speak with men as well as women, since men tend to earn more.
-Indicate that you maintain good relationships, a feminine quality.
-Suggest how this raise/promotion will enhance your boss’s position so you are discussing a ‘we’ not a ‘me’ idea.
-Negotiate in person, not over email.
-Practice, practice,, practice, role playing your conversation with a close friend before you actually ask for the raise or promotion is an excellent idea.
