Recent studies have found that people who have finely tuned feelings are experiencing the world and themselves more precisely. They can deal with their feelings more effectively and are less likely to drink excessively when stressed and less likely to retaliate aggressively when emotionally hurt.
It is not just that some people have better vocabularies. People who have diverse concepts of emotion handle their feelings better and experience less wear and tear on their bodies. Scientists call this Emotional Granularity.
Luckily emotional granularity is a skill and can learn to increase your emotional granularity by learning new words for emotions and the subtle differences between them.
The Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence has found that schoolchildren who learn more emotional concepts have improved social behavior and academic performance.
