THE SMARTEST WAY TO TAKE A VACATION
BEFORE
Scientists have found that anticipation is half the fun. The act of planning a vacation increases the sense of well-being we get from it, studies show. We are often happier before the trip than after.
For many people someplace different and getting more mental stimulation and excitement is more rewarding than a trip to the same old spot. For others there is comfort and delight in visiting the same place every year.
DURING
Well-being improves in as little as two days. On a longer vacation, the sense of health and well-being peaks on the eighth day, one study found.
Mental detachment is crucial for a successful vacation. Whether you travel or stay home, strive to turn off the phone, or limit email to a certain time each day if possible. Put the camera down occasionally and enjoy the scene.
Plan a special event toward the end of the vacation; we often remember an experience by how it finishes.
AFTER
That vacation afterglow fades quickly. Extend the beneficial effects by avoiding long hours at work and taking time to relax.
