A panic attack is a fear response that has a physiological component.
Patti McDermott suggests 4 important steps to shorten or stop panic attacks.
They are:
1 Relax – take some short deep breaths, remind yourself that you are only having a panic attack and nothing worse. Slow deep breaths will help you relax.
2 Stop Negative Thinking – Stop negative thinking, try to replace the worry and fear with a positive statement.
3 Use Coping Statements – Choose a calming statement that addresses the worry/fear you are experiencing, such as I’m only having a panic attack and it will be over in 3 minutes if I relax. or My fear is making my heart pound harder, my heart is fine.
4 Accept Your Feelings – Identify the emotions that triggered the panic attack.
